A boat with about 70 people on board capsized on Saturday in a river in Zamfara state in northwestern Nigeria, and local officials feared more than 60 dead.

The wooden boat was carrying farmers going to their fields, near the town of Gumi, when it capsized under unclear circumstances. Residents of the area mobilized immediately, but three hours after the rescue operation was set up, only six people had been pulled alive from the waters of the river.

Every day, more than 900 farmers use watercraft to reach their fields along the river, local officials say.

Zamfara state has also recently been hit by devastating floods. Two weeks ago, more than 10,000 residents were forced to leave their homes.
