US politicians have for years called for the release of Lin, who was sentenced to life in prison on contract fraud charges
China has released David Lin, an American pastor who had been in prison since 2006, the State Department announced today. Washington claimed Lin had been wrongfully imprisoned.
American politicians have for years urged Beijing to release Lin, who had been sentenced to life in prison on contract fraud charges.
“We welcome the release of David Lin from prison in the People’s Republic of China. Lin has returned to the US and will now be reunited with his family for the first time in nearly 20 years,” a State Department spokesman said.
Lynn’s daughter, Alice, earlier told Politico that her 68-year-old father would arrive in San Antonio, Texas.
“No words can express the joy we feel — we have a lot of time to make up,” Allyn told Politico.
Last November, the chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee had urged President Joe Biden to raise in a meeting with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping the issue of the release of Lin and two other American prisoners – Kai Li and Mark Swedan.
Washington argues that the three were unjustly imprisoned. Beijing stresses that such cases are dealt with under Chinese law.
A congressional committee is expected to hold a hearing next Wednesday on the case of US citizens detained in China, particularly Lin, Li and Shuidan, who are facing health problems, according to the congressman.
