Mariupol is in “humanitarian blockade”, says the mayor

by

The situation in Mariupol, which has been under Russian siege since yesterday afternoon, is dramatic, since the evacuation of civilians was postponed amid an exchange of accusations between Ukrainians and Russians for the failure of the humanitarian corridors.

The mayor of the city told Ukrainian television network that its residents have been faced with a “humanitarian blockade” as they are now deprived of all basic services.

He explained that Mariupol has not had electricity for five days. People are suffering from the cold, the mobile telephony networks are also not working, while the water supply has stopped.

The mayor complained that the Russian army acted with particular method to cut off all services in the city and intensify pressure on residents.

He also accused the Russian forces of opening fire on buses that would transport civilians out of the city through the so-called humanitarian corridor that was organized yesterday. Of the fifty buses full of fuel tanks, only twenty remain, the mayor added, warning that “we may not have any buses when civilians are allowed to leave again.”

The mayor called for the reopening of the humanitarian corridor so that the elderly and women and children could leave.

The city of Borodyanka – near Kyiv – is also under Russian control, a local official said. He said that the city has been destroyed, while there is no water and electricity

Clashes erupted on the outskirts of Kiev, and explosions were heard in the town of Brovary.
