Russian forces have captured the city of Ukrainsk, in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk region, Russia’s state-run RIA news agency reported, citing an unnamed Russian military source.

Soldiers raised the Russian flag at a mine ventilation shaft on the outskirts of the city. Reuters was unable to verify reports from the frontline.

The Russian army had surrounded Ukrainesk earlier this month.

Earlier today, Russia claimed to have repelled five new attempts by Ukrainian forces to cross its border into the Kursk region. In total, there have been 26 similar border attacks in the past six days.

On August 6, Ukraine launched the largest attack by a foreign state on Russia since World War II in the Kursk region, with thousands of troops, backed by swarms of drones and heavy weapons. Russia launched its counteroffensive in Kursk on September 10, forcing Ukrainian forces to retreat to the Snagost River. However, the Ukrainians have been trying for a week to cross the border to Veseloe and Medveze, threatening the Russian counterattack that is developing 15 kilometers to the west.

The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed that the attempted infiltrations towards Veseloe and Medveze were repelled “with the support of air force and artillery”.

Russian forces are attacking Lyubimovka, Malaya Loknia and other settlements in Kursk, he added.

Russian military bloggers wrote that Ukraine has seized some territory in the direction of Veselo and Medveze and that Russia is regaining ground and attacking Lyubimovka.
