At least five people were killed and 11 injured in a powerful explosion at a fireworks factory in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

The explosion occurred late Monday night in the Firozabad district, which is located approximately 275 kilometers west of the city of Lucknow, the capital of this Indian state.

“Five people, including two children, were killed and 11 others were injured in the explosion that occurred at a fireworks factory,” a police spokesman said, adding that the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital.

Firefighters and volunteers rushed to the scene of the explosion, searching for survivors in the rubble of the building that collapsed after the powerful explosion.

Explosions occur frequently in fireworks manufacturing factories in India as owners defy safety regulations.
