Georgia’s interior ministry said Kesaria Abramidze, 37, was believed to have been stabbed to death in her apartment on the outskirts of Tbilisi on Wednesday.
Georgian media later reported that a man had been arrested in connection with the crime.

Abramidze was, according to the Guardian, one of the first transgender public figures in the country to speak openly about his sexuality.
Her death has shaken public opinion in a country divided over the passage of controversial legislation that would allow officials to outlaw Pride-style events and censor movies and books.
A total of 84 MPs voted for the law and 0 against. His vote could raise tensions in Georgia as crucial October 26 parliamentary elections approach.
The new law bans “propaganda of same-sex and incestuous relationships” in educational institutions and television broadcasts, as well as “gatherings and demonstrations promoting same-sex relationships.”
The law “violates the fundamental rights of Georgians and risks reinforcing stigmatization and discrimination against a segment of the population,” the European Union complained.
In Russia, a similar law banning “LGBTQ propaganda” was passed about ten years ago and has since been expanded after Moscow added the “international LGBTQ movement” to the list of “terrorist and extremist” organizations.
