The famous American TV presenter Oprah Winfey yesterday organized a pre-election event in the form of a talk show to support Kamala Harris, with guests many stars of music and cinema, from Jennifer Lopez, Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts, as Ben Stiller and comedian Chris Rock.

The event, titled “Unite for America,” was held in Michigan and was livestreamed from both Winfrey and Harris’ YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and Twitch accounts.

In her intervention via zoom, Meryl Streep said that she is worried about the possibility that Trump will refuse to recognize any defeat in the election, as he did in 2020.

“I wonder if we’re ready for January 7,” she said, referring to Trump supporters storming the Capitol on January 6, 2021, to block the ratification of Joe Biden’s victory.

Oprah Winfrey, a staunch Democratic supporter, welcomed Harris, presenting her campaign as a movement for unity.

The 59-year-old presidential candidate answered a series of questions put to her by the 70-year-old presenter, which related to issues such as immigration, the cost of living, abortion and gun ownership – a major issue in the US.

“If someone comes into my house, I’ll shoot them”

In an emotional moment, Harris embraced a 15-year-old girl, Natalie Griffith, who was seriously injured on September 4 when a 14-year-old student opened fire at her school near Atlanta, killing four people. However, the Democratic nominee said she is a gun owner herself, as is the party’s vice presidential nominee Tim Walsh.

“If someone breaks into my house, I will shoot them,” he said. But he added with a laugh: “I probably shouldn’t have said that. My team will set it up later.”

Trump does not want strict gun restrictions, while Harris supports a ban on assault rifles, stricter background checks on gun buyers and laws to take away guns from those deemed dangerous.

The US vice president told Winfrey that she supports the Second Amendment to the US Constitution, which protects the right to bear arms.

Harris had mentioned the gun in her possession as early as 2019, when she was a senator, and again during the debate with Trump, in an effort to appeal to more conservative voters.
