Kyiv rejects Moscow-proposed humanitarian corridors to Russia and Belarus

Kyiv has rejected the humanitarian routes to Russia and Belarus proposed by Moscow for the evacuation of Ukrainian civilians, Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Irina Verestsuk said today.

“It is not an acceptable proposal,” Verestsuk said.

The Ukrainian deputy prime minister also said that Kyiv had asked Moscow to agree to a ceasefire this morning so that Ukrainians trapped in cities in the east of the country could reach Lviv in the west.

Earlier, a spokesman for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zhelensky complained that the Russian proposal for humanitarian corridors was “Completely immoral”.

“It’s a completely immoral story. “People’s suffering is being used to create the desired television image,” the spokesman wrote in a text message.

“These are citizens of Ukraine, they should have the right to resort to Ukrainian territory,” he added.

Earlier today, the Russian military announced that it would comply today temporary ceasefire from 09:00 (Ukrainian time and Greek time) in order to open humanitarian corridors in the cities of Kyiv, Kharkiv, Mariupol and Sumy, at the request of French President Emanuel Macron.

The Russian military added that it would open a corridor between Kiev and the Belarusian city of Gomel, near the Ukrainian border.

Two other corridors will start from Mariupol through which civilians can be directed either to the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don or to the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhia.

Moscow has clarified that another corridor will start from Kharkiv to the Russian city of Belgorod.

Finally, two corridors will be created for the evacuation of civilians from Sumy: one in the direction of Belgorod and the other in the direction of Poltava in Ukraine.

Two previous attempts to evacuate civilians from Mariupol and Volnovakha over the weekend failed to violate the ceasefire, with Kyiv and Moscow blaming each other.

Today, Zhelensky’s adviser, Oleksiy Arestovich, said talks were under way with Russia on the creation of humanitarian corridors, but added that they were difficult to set up as Russian troops continued to advance.

Arestovich added that the Ukrainians should be able to decide where to go, but advised them not to resort to Russia.
