Eric Adams Is New York’s First Incumbent Mayor To Be Indicted For Corruption – He Is Being Investigated If He Received Donations From The Turkish State
Today it is expected that the charges will be brought against the mayor of New York, Eric Adams, who has entered both himself and his associates under the “microscope” of the authorities.
The investigations focused on if the mayor of New York conspired with the Turkish government, during his election campaign and received illegal donations.
In addition, the federal investigation examined whether Mr Eric Adams pressured New York City Fire Department officials to sign off on opening Turkey’s New York consulate despite safety concerns. This is the so-called “skyscraper” of Erdogan or otherwise the “House of Turkey” which is located opposite the central building of the UN.
In addition, it is examined whether the mayor was treated favorably, regarding his flights, by the Turkish Airlineswhich is partially owned by the Turkish government.
Federal investigations
The mayor turned over his phones last November to investigate whether his 2021 campaign received illegal donations from citizens and government officials in Turkey.
The New York Times report that the investigation includes not only Adams’ ties to Turkey, but also to Israel, Qatar, China, South Korea and the former Soviet republic of Uzbekistan – the only one of the six Adams has not visited.
Investigators are trying to answer whether his 2021 mayoral campaign “conspired” with Turkey’s government to receive illegal foreign donations and whether the fire department was pressured to approve a new high-rise Turkish consulate despite security concerns.
The police also “dusted” Adams’ associates – “Rain” of resignations
Earlier in September, federal agents raided and seized the phones of the police commissioner, the first vice mayor, the schools chancellor, the vice mayor of public safety and a senior adviser who is one of the mayor’s closest confidantes.
Those actions led to four federal corruption investigations swirling around the Adams administration and led to the resignations of Police Commissioner Edward A. Campan and the mayor’s general counsel, Lisa Zornberg, who left the administration after Adams he resisted her advice to clean house.
New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan submitted his resignation on Monday and will be out of office by the end of the year. He said he is leaving the post for personal reasons and not because of the ongoing federal investigations into the Adams administration.
New York Mayor Adams and his reported relations with Turkey
“I’ve always known that if I stood up for New Yorkers, I would be a target — and I was,” Adams said, adding, “If I’m accused, I’m innocent and I’ll fight it with every ounce of my strength and spirit.”
The New York Times reports that investigators have sought information about a number of people, including Turkey’s former consul general in New York, Reyhan Özgür, whom Adams, during a flag-raising ceremony for Turkey in 2022, described as ” good friend”.
Another person named in his cellphone calls was Arda Sayiner, a self-proclaimed influencer consultant and journalist who does business in Turkey and whose website touts an interview he once had with Adams.
Sayiner helped organize Adams’ December 2015 trip to Turkey while he was mayor, his second official visit to the country in four months.
The indictment marks a difficult time for Adams. A Democrat and former police chief who won election nearly three years ago to become the nation’s largest city’s second black mayor and who promised law and order and reduced crime, the Associated Press.
Nearly a year after FBI agents seized his phones, New York City Mayor Eric Adams is facing a slew of federal investigations into his administration.
In recent weeks, the investigations have led to a flurry of subpoenas. Federal investigators visited more than a dozen members of his administration, seizing devices from the police commissioner (who later resigned), the head of public schools and other trusted people both inside and outside City Hall.
At least one high-ranking mayoral adviser has been subpoenaed to testify before a grand jury.
Federal prosecutors declined to discuss the investigations, but people familiar with the cases said the probes involved senior Adams aides, relatives of those aides, campaign fundraising and possible influence on police and fire departments.
Adams, a former police chief, has not been charged with wrongdoing and vehemently denies any knowledge of criminal activity.
