Two dead and four missing are the toll so far in the sinking of an oil barge in Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela’s state oil company PDVSA announced today.

There were earlier reports of at least four dead, however the PDVSA announcement clarifies that two bodies have been recovered from the waters of the lake and the operation to locate four missing persons continues. Another 19 people were rescued after the barge “Chantase G” sank, which was attributed to bad weather conditions in the area, according to the statement.

A large oil spill occurred in March off the coast of Tobago after a barge from Venezuela capsized, affecting several Caribbean countries.
