The Palestinian organization Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine announced that three of its leaders had been killed in an Israeli strike in Beirut, the first attack inside the city limits.

The PFLP said the leaders were killed in the attack which targeted Beirut’s Kola district.

The residential neighborhood was hit early this morning, according to the Associated Press.

The Israeli military did not comment.

The PFLP is a secular party that belongs to the Left and is involved in the war against Israel. The group was founded by Palestinian politician George Habash and promotes a one-state solution to the conflict Israel-Hamas.

The morning strike hit the top floor of an apartment building in the Kola district of its capital Lebanoneyewitnesses told Reuters.

According to an AFP source in the Lebanese security services, at least four people were killed in an Israeli drone strike on an apartment in the heart of Beirut that “belonged to Jemaah Islamiyah”, an organization of the Muslim Brotherhood movement, which has been repeatedly targeted by Israeli strikes since the start of the hostilities.

Although Sunni, the group has allied itself with Hezbollah and has been involved in attacks against northern Israel as a sign of “support” for Hamas.

The leader of Hamas in Lebanon is dead

In addition, the Hamas announced on Monday that its leader in Lebanon Fateh Sherif Abu el-Amin was killed along with members of his family in an Israeli strike last night in southern Lebanon.

The frequency of Israeli attacks against Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen has raised fears that fighting in the Middle East could get out of hand and involve Iran and the United States, Israel’s main ally.

Israel launched airstrikes on Sunday against the Houthis in Yemen and dozens of its targets Hezbollah across Lebanon after earlier killing Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.

The Houthi health ministry said at least four people were killed and 29 wounded in airstrikes on the Yemeni port of Hodeidah, which Israel said were in response to Houthi missile attacks.

In Lebanon, authorities said at least 105 people were killed by Israeli airstrikes on Sunday.

Lebanon’s health ministry said more than 1,000 Lebanese have been killed and 6,000 wounded in the past two weeks, without specifying how many were civilians. The government said a million people – a fifth of the population – have fled their homes.

Israeli drones flew over Beirut on Sunday, while loud explosions from new airstrikes echoed around the Lebanese capital. Displaced families spent the night on benches in Zaitunay Bay.

Monday’s attack in the Kola district is the first strike inside Beirut city limits.

The United States has called for a diplomatic solution to the conflict in Lebanon, but has also increased its military presence in the region.
