Alleged double agents provided Israel with sensitive information on Iran’s nuclear program, according to Iran’s former president
The former president of Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinejad claimed that the head of the unit, created by Iran’s intelligence services to combat Mossad activities in the country, was a covert agent of the Israeli organization.
Speaking to CNN Turk, Ahmadinejad also claimed that 20 other agents of the Iranian intelligence group tasked with monitoring Israeli espionage activities were working against Tehran.
Alleged double agents provided Israel with sensitive information about Iran’s nuclear program, according to Iran’s former president.
At the same time, he said that these double agents successfully carried out some of the Mossad’s activities inside Iran, including the theft of nuclear program documents in 2018 that were transferred from Tehran to Israel, which were disclosed by Benjamin Netanyahu. The documents are believed to have been used to persuade then-US President Donald Trump to withdraw from the nuclear deal between world powers and Iran.
Ahmadinejad claimed that the double agent and head of the counter-espionage unit, whose actions were exposed in 2021, and all the others have left Iran and now live in Israel.
Other Iranian officials have spoken of Mossad infiltration of Iran. A former Iranian minister who served as an adviser to former President Hassan Rouhani said in 2022 that senior officials in Tehran should fear for their lives because of “infiltration” by Israel’s spy agency.
It is noted that in another development, the French newspaper Le Parisien, citing a Lebanese source, reported on Saturday that Israel was informed of Nasrallah’s presence at the site where he was hit by Israeli forces in Beirut by an Iranian.
Immediately after the news of Nasrallah’s death, the Iranians took their Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to a safe location.
In July, Hamas political leader Ismail Haniya was killed in an explosion at the Tehran hostel where he was staying during a visit to attend the inauguration of Mesoud Pezeskian.
Days after Haniya’s death, Iran arrested at least 20 people suspected of connection to the assassination, the New York Times reported at the time, citing two Iranians.
Those arrested include senior Iranian intelligence officers, military officials and staff at the hostel run by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the report said. Iranians feared that a major security breach among high-ranking officials made the assassination possible.
