The bomb caused a large crater, but there were no injuries as there was no aircraft nearby and more than 80 flights were canceled
An American bomb from the Second World War which had been buried in Japanese Miyazaki Airport exploded suddenly on Wednesday, causing a large crater on a runway and canceling more than 80 flights, but there were no injuries, Japanese officials said.
Officials of the Ministry of Land and Transport stated that there was no aircraft nearby when the bomb exploded at the airport in southwestern Japan.
Officials said an investigation by self-defense forces and police confirmed the blast was caused by American 500-pound bomb and there was no further danger.
A video captured by a nearby aviation school showed the explosion sending chunks of asphalt into the air like a fountain.
Videos broadcast on Japanese television showed a crater forming in the taxiway, reportedly about 7 meters in diameter and 1 meter deep.
Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said more than 80 flights were cancelled at the airport, which hopes to reopen Thursday morning.
