A new hearing – which could lead to a new trial – has been set for November 26 on the new evidence that has emerged in favor of Eric and Lyle Menendez
After more than 30 years in prison for the murders of their parents, brothers Eric and Lyle Menendez, made world famous by the NETFLIX series “Monsters,” may now have a chance at release.
Their convictions are due to be reviewed as new evidence has emerged that may prove they were indeed sexually and psychologically abused by their father, Jose, as they claimed at their 1989 trial.
The wave of support for the two imprisoned brothers is constantly growing after the series aired.
Recently the family and relatives of the convicted murderers, who were sentenced to life without parole, announced that they are collecting signatures for their release, while their lawyer said that – in his fight for their release – “I have never had so much support, not only from the family of a victim, but also from the prison people who said ok, that’s enough.”
In fact, two days ago Kim Kardashian wrote an entire letter to NBC News in which she says that Eric and Lyle Menendez “are not monsters. They are kind, intelligent, honest men.”
The new data
The Menendez siblings killed their parents, Kitty and Jose Menendez, in 1989 inside their Beverly Hills mansion. The first trial ended without a jury verdict, and in the second, in 1996, they were found guilty and sentenced to life in prison without parole, largely dismissing their claims that they had been sexually abused for years.
Jurors convicted the Menendez brothers (then 21 and 18) convinced they killed their parents out of greed in order to inherit the fortune.
In recent months, as the series airs, new evidence has emerged, including a letter Eric wrote to his late cousin Andy Cano in December 1988, which was not initially presented in court and was recently discovered by the reporter. Robert Rand.
In the letters, the then young Eric revealed the boy’s fears of being attacked by his “crazy” father.
“It still happens, but it’s worse for me now,” Eric reportedly wrote.
New hearing in November
The District Attorney in Los Angeles – in a press conference said that, after the release of Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story on Netflix, his office received a lot of calls and information about the Menendez case.
“We are not, at this point, ready to say whether we believe or not believe this information. But we have an ethical obligation to review the evidence presented,” said George Gascon.
A hearing on the new evidence is set for November 26.
According to the prosecutor, the review of the evidence could lead to a new trial for Menendez, with some hope then of their release from prison.
On their side and Kim Kardashian
In a public letter, Kim Kardashian says she met the Menendez family in prison and spent time with them.
“I’ve spent time with Lyle and Erik. they are not monsters. They are kind, intelligent and honest men. In prison both are models of discipline. They have earned multiple college degrees, worked as caregivers for elderly inmates in hospice care, and mentored in college programs – committed to giving back to others.
When I visited the prison three weeks ago, one of the guards told me that he would feel comfortable having them as neighbors. “Twenty-four family members, including the siblings of their murdered parents, have issued statements fully supporting Lyle and Erik and respectfully asking that the justice system release them,” the famous TV personality and reality star wrote.
“With their case back in the spotlight — and given the revelation of a 1988 letter from Eric to his cousin describing the abuse — I hope the life sentences of Eric and Lyle Menendez will be reconsidered.
We owe it to those little boys who lost their childhoods, who never had the chance to be heard, to be helped or to be saved,” concludes Kim Kardashian
