Hurricane Milton is headed for the state of Florida and has rapidly intensified into an extremely dangerous Category 5 storm.

The storm, although weakened slightly, remains dangerous. It is located about 630 miles southwest of Tampa, Florida and is moving east at 9 mph. It is forecast to make landfall as a major Category 3 hurricane near densely populated Tampa late Wednesday.

Milton is packing winds of up to 285 km/h as it crosses the northern tip of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. Forecasters are warning of potentially devastating storms along coastal areas.

Florida residents are preparing to leave a large part of the state. This is the largest evacuation in years. Gov. Ron DeSandis is warning residents to hurry as time is running out and the hurricane is approaching menacingly.

“We have to assume this is going to be a monster,” Gov. DeSantis said at a press conference Monday afternoon.

Tampa Mayor Jane Castor warned residents who choose to stay behind in evacuation zones will die.

“I can say without any drama at all: If you choose to stay in one of these evacuation zones, you will die,” he told CNN Monday.

The Milton warnings come just 10 days after Hurricane Helene – the deadliest storm to make landfall since Katrina in 2005 – struck the southeastern US, killing at least 225 people. Hundreds more are missing.
