On Saturday, October 19, Chancellor Olaf Solz will travel to Istanbul, where he will meet with the President of Turkey, Tayyip Erdogan, Deputy Government Spokesman Volgang Buchner announced a while ago.

On the agenda will be the developments in Ukraine and in Middle Eastthe migratorybilateral and economic relations, the spokesman said.

In response to a question about whether the repatriation of Turkish asylum seekers from Germany would also be raised during the meeting, Mr. Büchner limited himself to stating that the federal government is in intensive confidential talks with countries of origin of immigrants to improve return options. “And in the matter of immigration, Turkey is an important partner of Germany”, he emphasized.

The deputy government spokesman also declined to answer a question about whether the German government would give the “green light” to the sale of fighter jets Eurofighter in Turkey, clarifying that arms export issues are not publicly discussed in detail.

“I can’t say anything about arms exports, but it goes without saying that in a visit of the German chancellor to the Turkish president one can always expect something new – but in a general context,” he said.

Asked if the chancellor thought Turkey could participate in a new Contact Group on Ukraine, Mr. Buchner stressed that “the developments in Ukraine and especially the effects of the Russian war against Ukraine will certainly be an important issue in this visit” and added that “Turkey is also an important partner in this”, as it “intensely supported the maintenance of Ukrainian grain deliveries”.
