US President Joe Biden has indicated that he is asking Israel not to fire on blue-collar workers (UNIFIL) during its operations against Hezbollah.

The Israeli military announced an internal investigation after two Indonesian peacekeepers were injured by Israeli fire on Thursday between Lebanon and Israel, while a new incident involving the injury of two Sri Lankan peacekeepers occurred on Friday.

The IDF stressed that they had ordered UNIFIL personnel before the incident to go to protected areas and stay there for hours.

UNIFIL announced earlier that two Sri Lankan peacekeepers were wounded near the border with Israel, estimating that Israeli army fire poses a “very high risk” to its soldiers.

In the afternoon, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said he had urged his Israeli counterpart Yoav Gallad to guarantee the safety of UNIFIL forces in Lebanon.

“I advocated for guaranteeing the security of UNIFIL forces and coordinating efforts to shift from military operations to a diplomatic route as soon as possible,” Austin said in a post on X after a phone call last night with Gallant.

For its part, the IDF notes that it instructed UNIFIL members to take shelter in protected areas hours before the latest incident.

Greece’s concern about the targeting of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon was expressed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in its post on X.
