Tragic moments in the besieged Mariupol. Ukrainian authorities failed to evacuate civilians from Mariupol once again today, Deputy Prime Minister Irina Verestsuk said, referring to the humanitarian catastrophe and catastrophic situation in the besieged city.
In statements “Moscow’s offer to open ‘humanitarian corridors’ leading to Russia or Belarus was unacceptable,” she said.
“The enemy launched an attack in the direction of the humanitarian corridor,” the Ukrainian Defense Ministry said, adding that Russian troops “did not allow children, women and the elderly to leave the city.”
Mariupol has been under heavy bombardment since the start of the war with Russia 13 days ago, and is suffering from shortages of food, water and electricity.
The World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Europe, Dr. Hans Kluge, described the Russian invasion of Ukraine as a “major humanitarian catastrophe”. He announced that they existed 16 confirmed attacks in health care services in Ukraine, including damage to facilities and hospitals and resulted in nine deaths and 16 injuries. “The WHO strongly condemns these attacks on healthcare services,” he said.
