About 1.4 million young men have enlisted or rejoined North Korea’s armed forces this week, according to the North Korean state news agency (KCNA). The youth are determined to fight a “holy war to destroy the enemy with the weapons of revolution,” the relevant publication says.

The reinforcement of the North Korean armed forces with this impressively large number of new recruits in the space of just two days was announced as tensions on the Korean peninsula escalate dangerously.

Last year, KCNA reported a similar-scale mobilization of volunteers who joined the North Korean armed forces to fight against the US.

North Korea blew up parts of the road and rail network in border areas on Tuesday, and the South Korean military responded with warning shots.

Pyongyang has accused Seoul of sending drones to drop propaganda leaflets on its soil.

“If war breaks out, South Korea will be wiped off the map. As long as it wants war, we are willing to put an end to its existence,” KCNA underlines.
