Sara Carbonero, journalist and ex-wife of Iker Casillas, spoke about her battle with cancer since 2019 and moved
Sarah Carbonero appeared at a gala to raise funds for cancer research. The journalist and ex-wife of Iker Casillas was awarded and spoke emotionally about the battle she has been fighting since 2019, when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
“This award is for those who suffer from this serious illness. Remember that there is always hope and light at the end of the tunnel. I am here, six years later, thanks to medicine and the love of my people. Others were not as lucky as I was, that’s why I dedicate the award to them,” said Carbonero who “bent” on the podium.
“This is the first time I have spoken openly and publicly about this. I avoided saying the word cancer, believing that if I didn’t name it, it wouldn’t be real. It took me time to accept it and understand that it is a marathon, that I will always be an oncology patient and live with uncertainty. But I learned to accept it and appreciate the time that is the most precious thing we have. The power of love is so great that it can heal everything,” he added.
“It’s not bad to look vulnerable, on the contrary! When I was diagnosed with cancer, I was in a state of shock. I was 35 years old, living a healthy life and couldn’t figure out why in me. My mind was full of ‘whys’. So now I want to reach out to people who are in a similar situation and tell them that in 10-15 years from now they can still be alive and going. That’s what some others did with me, giving me strength to continue,” concluded Sarah Carbonero.
