Palestinians are experiencing “unspeakable horror” in the northern part of the Gaza Strip, the interim head of the UN’s humanitarian aid agency, Joyce Mizuya, complained last Saturday night.

“Horrifying news from northern Gaza, where Palestinians continue to suffer unspeakable horrors under siege by Israeli (armed) forces,” the 55-year-old Tanzanian microbiologist who heads the United Nations’ Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said via X.

“These atrocities must stop,” Ms Misuya stressed.

Israel’s military has been conducting an air and ground operation in the northern part of the tiny Palestinian enclave since October 6 to prevent, it says, the regrouping of Hamas units.

The siege of the zone, which had already suffered widespread damage, has forced tens of thousands of people to flee again, while more than 400 people have been killed in two weeks, according to local emergency services.

“In Jabalia, people are trapped under the debris and first aid workers are unable to reach them,” Joyce Misuya said.

“Tens of thousands of Palestinians are being forcibly displaced. Essential goods are running out. Hospitals, flooded with patients, are being bombed,” he continued.

He recalled that under international humanitarian law, civilians, the wounded and sick, as well as health personnel and facilities, must be protected.

“International humanitarian law must be respected,” he insisted.
