Iran has the right and duty to defend itself against foreign acts of aggression,” the Iranian Foreign Ministry said in a statement, citing Article 51 of the UN Charter.
Iran said on Saturday it was obliged to “defend itself” against an attack launched by Israel hitting military targets across the Islamic Republic, an attack that came in retaliation for Tehran’s ballistic missile barrage earlier this month.
“Iran has the right and duty to defend itself against foreign acts of aggression,” Iran’s foreign ministry said in a statement, citing Article 51 of the United Nations Charter. However, in the same announcement no mention is made of direct retaliation.
According to two Iranian officials cited by the New York Times, one of the sites targeted was the S-300 air defense system at Imam Khomeini International Airport near Tehran.
Meanwhile, at least three missile bases of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps were targeted in the raids, according to unnamed officials, one of whom is a member of the IRGC.
Israeli drones also targeted the secret Parchin military base on the outskirts of Tehran, the NYT reported.
