British chef Jamie Oliver used his networks to expose a million-dollar scam suffered by one of the most awarded artisan cheese shops in England, Neal’s Yard Dairy. On his Instagram account, he says that the company was the victim of an “audacious robbery of shocking proportions”: “An incredible 22 tons of premium cheddar, worth £300,000 (about R$2.2 million), disappeared “.
On its website, the cheese factory explains what happened. The robbery involved a buyer posing as a wholesale distributor for a large French retailer. More than 950 pieces of Hafod, Westcombe and Pitchfork Cheddar were delivered before the fraud was discovered. “The valuable cargo was sent in good faith, to disappear without a trace”, says Oliver, in text and video on Instagram.
The chef, who became popular in Brazil by presenting gastronomy programs on TV, asked his followers to be alert if they hear about or come across “truckloads of refined cheeses” being offered at below-market prices.
Neal’s Yard Dairy says that despite the significant financial hit, it has paid the three artisan cheese makers in full. The police have already been called.
