The Ukrainian government will create a state reserve food that will be big enough to feed the country’s people and the armed forces during the Russian invasion, Ukrainian Prime Minister Dennis Smigal said late Wednesday night, according to the government press service.
“The state will buy grain and other stocks in the quantities consumed annually by the whole country at the expense of the state budget,” the government press service said, citing Smigal’s statements.
“This will provide the country with sufficient food,” Smigal said, without elaborating.
Ukraine is a country with a large production and export of food, but agricultural analysts have pointed out that the Russian invasion – which calls its actions in Ukraine a “special operation” – could drastically reduce the cultivated area for grain harvest in 2022, causing shortages for the rest of the world, as well as for Ukraine.
The country, which traditionally begins preparations for spring crops in late February or early March, has announced that farmers will start sowing in safe areas, but may face a shortage of fuel and seeds.
