The Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orban expects the Republican candidate for the presidency of the USA Donald Trump will immediately take the initiative to find a diplomatic solution to end the war in Ukraineif he wins the US election next week.

“We are getting ready,” Orban said at an event in Vienna today, following his phone call with Trump.

The Hungarian prime minister is considered one of Trump’s most important supporters among EU leaders.

“Within a short period of time, (Trump) will have contacts with the president of Russia for negotiations,” Orban said, referring to the possibility of the Republican candidate winning the November 5 US presidential election.

American voters head to the polls on Tuesday to elect the next US president. Viktor Orbán has made no secret of his desire for Trump to win in the face-off with Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.

In a post on the X platform (formerly Twitter), Orbán said that he contacted Trump by phone today: “I wished him good luck for next Tuesday. Only five days left. I hope everything goes well.”

The Prime Minister of Hungary argued that at this stage, the negotiations cannot be aimed at bringing peace to the relations between Kiev and Moscow, but only at ending the bloodshed through a truce.

The European Union has not yet realized that the war is lost for Kiev, Orban claimed at the event organized by Swiss newspaper Weltwoche, which was also attended by former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder.

Both Schröder and Orbán maintain friendly relations with Kremlin strongman Vladimir Putin.
