Trump sparked outrage over comments he made about Cheney at a campaign rally in Arizona on Thursday.
Arizona’s attorney general announced tonight that her office is investigating whether Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump violated state law when he said Liz Cheney, a fierce critic of his, should face gunfire in a fight.
Trump sparked outrage over comments he made about Cheney at a campaign rally in Arizona on Thursday.
His staff say he criticized her for being warmongering, but his political opponents see his remarks as evidence that he will target his enemies if he wins the Nov. 5 election.
“He is a radical war hawk. Let’s put her with a rifle standing there, with nine barrels shooting at her, okay? Let’s see how she feels then, with guns pointed in her face,” Trump said of the former Republican lawmaker.
Speaking to a local television station today, Attorney General Chris Mayes said Trump may have violated state law banning death threats. “I have already asked the head of the criminal division to investigate this statement, to analyze whether it qualifies as a death threat under Arizona law,” he told Channel 12News.
Mayes said it was unclear whether what Trump said was a comment covered by free speech or a criminal threat. “That’s the question, did he cross the line. It is very disturbing. It’s something that makes people angry and makes our situation in Arizona and other states more dangerous,” he added.
Associates of Trump have previously said his comments were misinterpreted. “President Trump is 100% right that warmongers like Liz Cheney are too quick to start wars and send other Americans to fight instead of going to war themselves,” said spokeswoman Carolyn Leavitt.
Vice President Kamala Harris called Trump “increasingly unstable and shaky.”
“Anyone who wants to be president of the United States and uses this kind of violent rhetoric is clearly unfit to be president,” he told a rally in Madison, Wisconsin.
