Israel appreciates that 51 of the hostages held at Gaza Strip are alivethe Jewish newspaper Israel Hayom reported today Sunday.

About 101 hostages are currently being held captive in Gaza. From this number, 37 hostages have been officially declared dead, says the report.

The Jewish daily adds that while there is still no definitive evidence of the death of other hostages, authorities have sufficient information that other hostages may no longer be alive.

An official reportedly told Israel Hayom that the families of the hostages who are no longer believed to be alive have been informed of these assessments.

According to the report, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee in September that only half of the hostages were believed to be still alive.

Last June, the Wall Street Journal cited US officials that only 50 of the 120 hostages held at that time in captivity were still alive.

Hostage Agreement Negotiations

This new report comes amid efforts to renew negotiations on the hostage agreement. In late October, it was reported that negotiators holding talks in the Qatari capital, Doha, discussed a deal that would release a limited number of hostages in exchange for a short-term ceasefire.
