How the political parties saw the American election campaign and what are their preferences – What would Italian citizens vote for
Italy followed the American election campaign with great interest and, even if there were no heated confrontations, some of the biggest parties – directly or indirectly – decided to take a stand. As far as the conservative coalition that governs the country is concerned, the prime minister can Georgia Meloni to try to keep an even distance, but it is clear that most of the organized members of her party, Adelphia d’Italia, are “leaning” towards republican candidate. The main strong, common point they identify, as it turns out, is, first of all, the strategy for dealing with immigration. In case of Trump’s election, of course, we will have to see if Meloni will decide to revise her stance on the Ukrainian. As is well known, he has so far approved all the manipulations of the Biden administration and expressed full support to Kiev, sending military aid.
As for the League, its secretary and Minister of Transport, Matteo Salvinyes, he is certainly its most fanatical supporter donald trump, throughout the Italian political scene. “I hope he wins, he represents the future and will protect rights and freedom,” Salvini said. The common points of his party with the Republican agenda, as he emphasizes, are of primary political importance: “from the protection of the family, to security, to the fight against illegal immigration and religious fanaticism.” Salvini, in fact, likened Trump’s legal adventures to those of the Italian tycoon and former prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi.
Some others, however, preferred to wait. It is the case of the party Forsa Italy, creation of the “Cavaliere” himself. “We didn’t want to interfere in the American election race. We are friends of the United States and we will work effectively with them, regardless of who is elected” repeated, during the last weeks, the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs and current leader of Forza Italia, Antonio Tajani.
As for the opposition and the movement Five Stars decided not to express a clear preference. “Whoever wins, we should seek to maintain good relations, with the aim of protecting our national interests. When it comes to candidates from foreign countries, I don’t want to express an opinion”, is the position of the leader of the “five stars” and former prime minister, Giuseppe Conte.
As regards, finally, the center-left Democratic Party, its support Kamala Harris it is clear. The secretary of the Italian “Democrats”, Elie Schlein, underlined that the vice president of the American government showed courage and emphasized key issues, such as the right to housing, care, work and that all citizens should be paid decently.
Beyond the realm of politics, there are, of course, interesting positions from experienced commentators. Like, for example, his Gianni Ryotaformer news director of Rai’s first television channel and newspaper La Stampa. Ryota, who knows the United States well, believes that social media and, in particular, TikTok will weigh more than ever before in the final result. With many young women, tiktokers, who mobilized in her favor Kamala Harris and, respectively, men aged up to thirty years who, with the short videos, unreservedly supported the Trump.
Another experienced analyst, the American journalist Alan Friedmanwho has lived in Italy for many years and published a biography of Silvio Berlusconi, made a clearer prediction: “I have a feeling that Trump can succeed, because in the past we found that he received more votes than the various people told us gallop”. According to Friedman, “many Americans are too embarrassed to say they intend to vote for the Republican nominee and, for this reason, do not respond to pollsters.”
But who would Italians support if they had the right to vote in the American elections? According to a gallop by the Youtrend company, 78% of respondents would trust Kamala Harris, and only 22% Trump.
It seems almost self-evident that 95% of Italian voters, center-left Democratic Party strongly supports the American vice president. What is surprising, however, is that 49% of citizens who, according to this statistical sample, two years ago chose Meloni’s party, would also “cross” the “Democrats” candidate. As for the fans of the Italian “five stars”, the tycoon who received the anointing of the Republicans and once again set his sights on the armchair of the oval office, is chosen by only 15% of the respondents. Based on Alan Friedman’s analysis, however, it would be interesting to understand if – even here in Italy – some may avoid openly declaring that they like and would support, as the new president, Donald Trump.
