All over the planet and especially in Europe, the eyes are on the United States, twenty-four hours before the polls officially open to find out whether we will have Trump return to the presidency or Kamala Harris as the country’s first female president. However, this anxiety is not shared by the entire planet. In long-suffering Lebanon, for example, which continues to be bombed, no one seems to expect much from this process. Characteristic are the words of 63-year-old Josef.

“Based on our experiences with Americans or foreigners, there has never been any confidence in the American president, current or future. We saw how Donald Trump moved the embassy to Jerusalem, and then we also saw what he did in many places, whether in Syria, or in Yemen, or in Iraq. There is no trust in the Americans, not in Trump, not in Harris, not in… “Maris”, not in anyone else who comes.”

“America is Israel”

The 70-year-old Abou, a resident of Beirut, is also categorical, who, as he says, has seen many expectations belied from time to time by a change in the attitude of the US in the region after a change of president…

“Israel is America and America is Israel. Since every president has been servile to Israel, there is no doubt that they are no different. Historically, people bet that one American president is better than the other. In the end, everyone is worse than one another.”

The truth is, however, that both outgoing President Joe Biden and his candidate for successor have shown no inclination to pressure the Netanyahu government for a ceasefire, but mainly for a permanent settlement of outstanding issues in the region.

The curse of outside mixing

What the Lebanese would prefer would be to stop the interventions of foreign powers in their troubled homeland, Yosef underlines.

“The elections going on now in America have nothing to do with Lebanon. In my opinion, in order to solve the Lebanon problem, foreign involvement should stop. Leave the Lebanese alone to elect a president, a clean parliament, a clean government and so on. But the fact that the conflict in Lebanon is linked to America is definitely not correct.”

These days the UN World Food Program warned that the humanitarian crisis in Lebanon as well as in Gaza “could soon escalate into famine”. The situation is much worse than that of the war of 2006. This is a reality that is not expected to change immediately, regardless of whether the blue of the Democrats or the red of the Republicans celebrate on Tuesday night.
