“Alarm” for the Chernobyl and Zaporizhia nuclear power plants – What the Atomic Energy Agency says

by

Concerns over the situation at Ukraine’s two nuclear power plants, Chernobyl and Zaporizhia, have raised concerns with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that communications have been “downgraded” and power has not been restored, according to Skynews.

“There is no confirmation yet that power has been restored at Chernobyl in northern Ukraine. “Data collection from both there and from Zaporizhia to the south has been jeopardized,” the report said, citing the International Organization.

Rafael Grossi, head of the service, said they could not understand why this happened.

“There is a ‘growing issue’ with nuclear safeguards in Ukraine,” he added.

Both Russian and Ukrainian foreign ministers have expressed interest in a new security framework for nuclear facilities in Ukraine, but have also asked some questions about it, he continued.

“Quite detailed” ideas are going to be presented in both countries in the next few hours, Mr Grossi said.
