In every state, Trump outperformed in the 2020 election, while Harris failed to match Joe Biden’s ratings when he won the presidency four years ago
Donald Trump was elected the 47th president of the United States on Wednesday, scoring a major victory for a former president who refused to accept defeat four years ago, sparked a violent riot on Capitol Hill, was convicted of a felony and survived two assassination attempts.
With a victory in Wisconsin, Trump secured the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency. At the same time, he beat Michigan on Wednesday afternoon, sweeping the “blue wall” along with Pennsylvania. Specifically, he currently has 294 electors, compared to Harris’ 223.
With his victory in Michigan, after Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, Donald Trump won the three key states in the northern part of the country – where the Democratic candidate Kamala Harris appeared in the pre-election as the favorite.
In particular, so far Trump is winning the states of Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Georgia, North Carolina, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Utah, Montana, Nebraska, Texas, Ohio, North Dakota, South Dakota, Louisiana, Wyoming, Nebraska, Florida, South Carolina, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Alabama, West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana and Michigan. At the same time, it maintains a lead in Nevada, Arizona and Alaska.
Kamala Harris, based on the same projections, leads in Minnesota, Hawaii, Virginia, New Mexico, Oregon, California, Washington, Colorado, New Jersey, New York, Illinois, Delaware, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maryland and Vermont.
His Democratic rival, Vice President Kamala Harris, called Trump Wednesday afternoon to congratulate him. A short time later, US President Joe Biden also called Trump to congratulate him and invite him to the White House, officially starting the transition, the White House said. Biden also called Harris.
“I want to thank the American people for the extraordinary honor of electing me the 47th and 45th president of the country,” Trump told a cheering crowd of supporters in Florida, even before his victory was confirmed.
In every state, Trump outperformed in the 2020 election, while Harris failed to match Joe Biden’s ratings when he won the presidency four years ago. Meanwhile, once back in office, Trump will be working with a Senate he won control of, pending the outcome of who will control the House.
“We’ve been through so much together, and today you came together in record numbers to achieve victory,” Trump said. “That was something special,” he said.
The US stock market, Elon Musk’s Tesla, banks and bitcoin rose on Wednesday as investors looked favorably on a smooth election and Trump’s return to the White House. In his second term, Trump has announced that he will pursue an agenda focused on reforming the federal government.
The results capped a tumultuous primary season that included two assassination attempts targeting Trump and Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race.
Immediately after taking office on January 20, Trump will face a series of challenges, with political polarization at home and global crises abroad testing America’s influence.
His victory over Harris, the first woman of color to lead either major party, marks the second time he has defeated a female opponent in a general election. Harris, the current vice president, emerged as the Democratic nominee after Joe Biden withdrew.
Trump is the first former president to return to office since Grover Cleveland regained the White House in 1892. He is the first convicted felon to be elected president and, at 78, is the oldest candidate elected to office.
