The president of the European Council, Charles Michel, spoke of a “strategic discussion” on transatlantic relations.
Transatlantic relations will be the focus of European leaders tonight at a dinner in Budapest on the sidelines of the meeting of the European Political Community and the informal European Council on November 7-8.
In his letter of invitation to the 27, European Council President Charles Michel spoke of a “strategic debate” on transatlantic relations.
“Our relationship with the US is essential and we are ready to deepen it. We must continue to adhere to our priorities according to the Strategic Agenda, actively working towards a strong and sovereign Europe,” he noted.
He noted that the discussion will focus on three areas: bilateral relations, security and geopolitics — especially Ukraine — and global challenges and international cooperation, including climate change.
He also notes that the issue of Georgia and the situation after the American elections will be raised, while there will be an exchange of views on the recently adopted Israeli legislation against UNRWA, which if implemented, as the president of the European Council states, will make ” impossible to implement the mandate of UNRWA”.
“We will discuss what the consequences could be in our relationship with Israel,” he added.
Tomorrow Friday (November 8) leaders will focus on boosting competitiveness.
“The situation is very worrying,” noted Charles Michel, explaining that “over the last 20 years, the EU’s share of global GDP has halved. We must act now.”
He underlines that the reports of (Mario) Draghi and (Enrico) Letta call for a wake-up call and the EU must be ready to accept this.
“The competitive survival of the Union is at stake,” he says. Former Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi and European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde will be present. “Our discussions, in the presence of Professor Draghi and President Lagarde, will cover concrete strategies to reverse our current course and enable our companies to prosper — strategies that promote innovation, build on the strengths of our single market and support sustainable development” concludes Charles Michel.
