Beijing: Chinese Foreign Minister speaks for the first time about war in Ukraine

by

China hopes the war in Ukraine can end as soon as possible, Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Thursday, describing the situation in Ukraine for the first time as a “war”.

“We hope to see the fighting and the war stop as soon as possible,” Wang was quoted as saying by Reuters, citing China’s state-run CCTV network, in a teleconference with his French counterpart, Jean-Yves Le Drian.

Wang called on all sides ‘To calm down “and take more action to prevent escalation in Ukraine,” CCTV said.

Beijing, which has close ties with Moscow, has refrained from calling the Russian attack on Ukraine an “invasion” or condemning it, calling Russia a strategic partner.

Chinese President Xi Jinping is worried about the Russian invasion of Ukraine, as “his own services do not seem to have told him what will happen,” said CIA Director Bill Burns.

Speaking to the committee of the US Senate on Thursday, Burns said Xi was worried about the damage that China’s reputation could suffer from being linked to the “ugliness” of Russia’s aggression in Ukraine.

“President Xi is rather a little worried as he watches President Putin bring the Americans and Europeans closer together and strengthen the transatlantic alliance in ways that were a little hard to imagine before the introduction,” he said.
