The authorities of Guerreroone of Mexico’s most violent states, announced today that they had found the bodies of 11 people in the capital Chilpanchigo, in what appears to be another gruesome killing spree, weeks after the city’s mayor was murdered and beheaded.

The bodies belonged to nine men and two womenwith two minors among the dead and their identities have not been identified at this time, the Guerrero district attorney’s office said in a statement.

A citizen alerted authorities to an abandoned van last night, leading them to find the bodies. The deaths are being investigated as homicides, according to the release.

In October, Mr mayor of Tsilpanchigo, 43-year-old Alejandro Arcoswas assassinated six days after taking office. Photos of his severed head mounted on the roof of a small truck circulated in local media and on Whatsapp, sending shock waves across the country.

The case was one of the first major challenges for Mexico’s new president, Claudia Sheinbaum, who has pledged to reduce violent crime.

Sheinbaum, who unveiled her security plans days after Arkos’ murder, said she would continue to offer social support to young people as an alternative to organized crime, an approach also used by her mentor, former President Andres. Manuel Lopez Obrador.

Since the president was sworn in on October 1, 2,638 homicides have been recorded in Mexicoaccording to the analysis, based on government data, by polling firm TResearch’s.
