For months, the Alternative for Germany has been calling for elections, hoping for a boost in percentages. To date, however, all parties reject a collaboration
After the end of the coalition government in Berlin, Alternative for Germany wants everything to be done quickly. The far-right party demands from the chancellor Olaf Solz to request a vote of confidence as early as next week. AfD co-president Alice Weidel even states that her party is “prepared for the scenario of early elections”.
Since the three-party government of Social Democrats, Greens and Liberals took office at the end of December 2021, Alternative for Germany has accused it of failure in all areas. Like the newly elected president of the USA, Donald Trump, he opposes illegal immigration and open borders.
At a press conference on the occasion of the collapse of the government coalition in Berlin AfD co-chairman Tino Krupala said: “We must stop the incentives for immigration in the German social system, grant immigrants benefits in kind and not in money, return criminals and those who do not are entitled to asylum in their countries of origin, to close the borders and leave the common European asylum system on the model of countries such as Poland, the Netherlands and Hungary”.
17% polls give the AfD
It is likely that in the upcoming early elections, AfD will increase its influence in federal politics. In the last elections in September 2021, the AfD received a rate of 10%. Today the opinion polls give the Alternative for Germany a percentage of around 17%.
In order to realize its goals, the AfD is openly in favor of a cooperation with the German conservatives, but also with the Liberals. The parties in question categorically exclude any cooperation with the Alternative for Germany. Party co-president Alice Weidel states: “We call on Christian Democrats, Christian Socialists and Liberals to finally take their responsibilities and come to an agreement with us. We have the support of millions of voters but we are excluded. Why should this happen? We advocate a bourgeois liberal policy.”
At this time it is not clear whether the AfD’s numerous scandals will affect the election results in the upcoming federal elections. A few days ago, on November 5, three members of Alternative for Germany were arrested for allegedly supporting a far-right terrorist group. The AfD is considering their expulsion from the party. At the same time, investigations are underway against a member of the Bavarian parliament for hate speech, while a member of the federal parliament is in custody for alleged involvement in coup planning.
