The right engine of a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner of the Chinese airline Hainan Airlines burst into flames shortly after takeoff from Rome’s Fiumicino airport this morning, an Italian airport official said.
The aircraft, which was bound for the Chinese city of Shenzhen, returned to Fiumicino and landed safely after dumping its fuel in the sea.
The cause of the incident is not clear, the official said, stressing that there were no delays to air traffic over Fiumicino.
However there were reports that the aircraft’s engine was hit by a bird.
