London, Thanasis Gavos

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer will be in Paris today at the personal invitation of President Emmanuel Macron to attend Armistice Day, the anniversary of the end of the First World War.

He is the first British leader to commemorate this anniversary from France since 1944, when Winston Churchill was invited by General Charles de Gaulle.

Messrs. Starmer and Macron will be flanked by French and British war veterans and French civilians as they lay wreaths at the war memorial in the French capital and at the Unknown Soldier monument at the Arc de Triomphe.

Before the start of the official ceremony, the two leaders will hold talks on burning international issues, such as the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East. According to British media, they will also assess the re-election of Donald Trump to the US presidency and in particular the possibility of the next US president imposing tariffs on products imported into his country.

Arriving in Paris Sir Kiir said he was honored to stand alongside President Macron to pay tribute to the fallen of the First World War “who made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom we enjoy today”.

Mr Starmer will also have his first meeting with French Prime Minister Michel Barnier.
