“Europe has an excellent Civil Protection Mechanism. We want to build on this and launch a new European Civil Defense Mechanism,” he stressed
The president of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, spoke about the adaptation in relation to climate change in her video message at the Hanalhomen forum, in favor of the creation of a European Civil Defense Mechanism.
As he noted, “Europe has an excellent Civil Protection Mechanism. We want to build on this and launch a new European Civil Defense Mechanism. Our military and civilian personnel must be ready to cooperate in emergency situations, not only at national, but also at European level.”
Ursula von der Leyen said that a new Commission will present a Strategy for the preparedness of the Union pointing out that it will be considered what needs to change in all EU policies. In this context, in addition to the European Civil Defense Mechanism for adaptation to climate change, also focused on critical supply chains. “Our most vital supply chains must be resistant to the crisis,” emphasized the president of the Commission.
He also underlined that there must be a scaling up of EU defense industrial production and as he added “this requires a true single defense market, with more cross-border cooperation, more standardization and a stronger role for European small and medium-sized enterprises in our supply chains”.
Finally, Ursula von der Leyen said that the EU’s capacity to produce high-tech products, but also large quantities such as ammunition, should be strengthened.
