Russian soldiers have abducted the mayor of Melitopol, Ivan Fedorov, today, according to Ukrainian Interior Minister Anton Gerashenko.

“A group of ten occupiers kidnapped the mayor of Melitopol, Ivan Fedorov,” Randa, the Ukrainian parliament, said on his Twitter account. “He refused to cooperate with the enemy,” he added.

According to this source, the mayor was arrested while he was in the crisis center of the city, which is about 120 kilometers south of Zaporizhia, to resolve supply issues. Another official, Kirillo Tymoshenko, posted a video on the Telegram showing soldiers coming out of a building from a distance, holding a man dressed in black, with his head covered in a black hood.

According to Gerasekno, Fyodorov refused to cooperate with the Russian army, which has control of the city.

The Ukrainians claim that the Russian forces intend to replace him with a “pro-Russian” or even a Russian mayor, as the city is being pounded daily by bombings and attacks.

A few days ago, the deputy head of the Zaporizhia regional council, Leila Ibrahimova, was also abducted but released, according to Randa.

Before the Russian invasion, on February 24, Melitopolis had about 150,000 inhabitants.
