The United States has accused Russia of violating nuclear safety principles by expressing concern about “continued Russian fire against nuclear facilities” in Ukraine. They emphasize, however, that so far there is no evidence of radioactivity release.
“We are examining reports of damage to a research center in Kharkov. “The immediate danger is low, but the ongoing Russian fire against nuclear facilities must stop,” US Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm said in a Twitter post.
In particular, the American minister states in her briefing:
“The Ministry of Energy is still monitoring the situation. We remain concerned about Russia’s reckless actions and breaches of the nuclear safety principles.
Fortunately, radiation monitoring stations in Ukraine are still operating and we have not detected any signs of radioactivity release.
I spoke with Rafael Grossi yesterday and thanked him for the International Atomic Energy Agency’s efforts to restore security. We will continue to support these efforts.
We can not confirm the allegations that electricity has been restored at Chernobyl. Ukrainian colleagues say some diesel has been delivered to power backup generators.
Restoring external power to Chernobyl is an important step for security, and Russia must act quickly to allow it to return.
We remain concerned about the lack of data from Chernomil and Zaporizhia surveillance stations, which do not allow the international community to monitor footage from these sites.
We are examining reports of damage to a research center in Kharkov. The immediate danger is low, but the ongoing Russian fire against nuclear facilities must stop.
We are also concerned that staff at Chernobyl and Zaporizhia are working under pressure and without the necessary rest, which poses a security risk.
The flow of spare parts and supplies to Zamboria has reportedly been disrupted, posing an additional security risk.
In conclusion: Russia’s violation of basic principles of nuclear safety is unacceptable and attacks that endanger security in Ukraine and beyond must stop. “
