At least 11 people were killed and more than 20 injured, according to Lebanon’s health ministry, after a massive Israeli attack in the early hours of the morning in the densely populated Basta district of central Beirut leveled a multi-storey residential building.

The eight-story building was completely destroyed without warning by five rockets in the densely populated Basta district, according to Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA).

The Israeli attack occurred at around 04:00 local time (02:00 GMT) on Saturday with explosions rocking the city.

Emergency teams are investigating the site, removing debris from the site, as announced by the Ministry of Health. Local resident Nemir Zarariya said he and his family were sleeping when the pre-dawn attack began.

“We were fast asleep and then there was an explosion and then a second one. We didn’t understand what happened,” he told the BBC.

“There was dust and destroyed houses, people running and screaming. My wife is in the hospital, my daughter is in the hospital, my aunt is in the hospital.”

This is the fourth Israeli attack this week in downtown Beirut. On Monday, Iran-backed Hezbollah said its spokesman Mohammad Afif was killed in an airstrike.

In recent months, Israeli strikes have killed several top Hezbollah members in Beirut, including the group’s leader Hassan Nasrallah.
