From the hell of war … rape victim: Pole rapes 19-year-old Ukrainian, sheltering her

A man has been arrested in Poland on suspicion of raping a 19-year-old girl, who he lured to his home, offering shelter online after she left Ukraine.

In an incident that sparked concerns about human trafficking and sexual exploitation as a result of the Russian invasion, police in Wroclaw said they had arrested the 49-year-old rape suspect.

He could face up to 12 years in prison for “violent crime”, authorities said. “He met the girl offering his help through a web portal,” police said in a statement.

“He escaped from war-torn Ukraine, he did not speak Polish. “She trusted a man who promised to help her and provide her with housing.”

“Unfortunately, all this turned out to be fraudulent manipulation.”

In another case in Poland, which has taken in about 1.5 million refugees from neighboring Ukraine, a man allegedly promised a job and a room to a 16-year-old girl before authorities intervened.

“Obviously all refugees are women and children,” said Joung-ah Ghedini-Williams, head of global communication at the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, who has visited the borders of Romania, Poland and Moldova.

“You have to worry about the potential risks of trafficking, but also of exploitation, sexual exploitation and abuse. These are the kinds of situations that people like traffickers are trying to take advantage of,” he said.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) says more than 2.5 million people, including more than a million children, have already fled war-torn Ukraine in an unprecedented humanitarian crisis in Europe and are fleeing Second World War.
