Russian air defenses shot down two missiles and 27 drones fired by Ukrainian forces against the Kursk region, local authorities said today.

In his post on the Telegram platform, regional governor Alexei Smirnov did not specify the type of missiles that were shot down, nor did he go into further details about the attacks.

In the past few days, Ukraine has launched US ATACMS and British Storm Shadow missiles against Russian territory, while in retaliation Russia used an Orechnik hypersonic ballistic missile for the first time to hit an industrial facility in the Ukrainian city of Dnipro.

With the surprise incursion of Ukrainian forces into Russia’s Kursk region in August, Kiev hoped it would halt attacks in eastern and northeastern Ukraine, force Russia to withdraw forces advancing on the eastern front, and gain greater leverage in any future peace negotiations.

However, Russian troops continue to advance in the eastern Donetsk region, while Ukrainian forces have reportedly lost control of more than 40% of the territory they had seized in the Kursk region.
