The American Hellenic Institute (AHI) urges President Joe Biden to use the remaining time of his presidential term to further upgrade the level of cooperation between the US and the Republic of Cyprus.

The Greek-American organization proposes to the American president to undertake specific initiatives that will establish Cyprus as a key partner of NATO in the Eastern Mediterranean. Among the proposals, the entry into the Mediterranean Dialogue (MD) is included, but also the finding of additional synergies through the specialized cooperation programs (ITPPs) available to the alliance.

In the letter, AHI applauds the steps taken over the past four years to strengthen the partnership between Washington and Nicosia. The establishment of the first Strategic Dialogue, the signing of the road map for bilateral defense cooperation, the upgrading of military cooperation and the joint effort to create the maritime humanitarian corridor in Gaza are characteristically highlighted.

Mr. President, you have already worked to strengthen the critical ties between NATO allies and partners in the Indo-Pacific – we urge you to do the same in the Eastern Mediterranean. The Eastern Mediterranean is a geopolitical focal point and the lack of action to counter Turkey’s destabilizing behavior sends a message that may encourage further aggression,” it said.

In this context, disappointment is expressed that there has been a lack of significant progress over the past four years on critical issues related to Turkey’s actions that oppose American interests in the Eastern Mediterranean region. The Greek-American organization recalls the long-term involvement that President Biden had as a senator with the specific issues. This specific event had fostered expectations for a more decisive stance in dealing with pressing challenges such as the continued occupation of Cyprus.

“After five decades, the illegal occupation of the Republic of Cyprus remains an unsolved problem. The effects of this protracted crisis extend beyond the Republic of Cyprus itself, as the occupation affects stability throughout the Eastern Mediterranean. “In addition, the occupation undermines US regional policy interests related to energy security, maritime security, counterterrorism, and trade,” the letter said.

In this light, AHI argues that the US can play a critical role in facilitating dialogue and providing the necessary support for the reunification of the Republic of Cyprus. As stated, there is a real need for a comprehensive approach that prioritizes diplomatic engagement, supports the rights of Cypriots and promotes a solution to the issue of the occupation of the Republic of Cyprus based on the rule of law, International Law and US law .

Finally, the American Hellenic Institute thanks President Biden for his service and commitment to advancing the issues that matter to the Greek-American community. The letter concludes by saying “as we look to the future, we hope that you will prioritize resolving the occupation of the Republic of Cyprus so that the nation can finally be free and live in peace. We also hope that you will use your remaining days in office to address Turkey’s destabilizing actions in the Eastern Mediterranean. The final months of your term are a critical opportunity to make a difference that will last, and we urge you to seize it.”
