The Russians are pushing for an “independence” referendum in occupied Kherson

by

A senior Ukrainian official in the Russian-occupied Kherson region has said Russians are pushing the regional council to agree to a referendum in the region on “independence” from Ukraine.

As it transmits CNNSerhiv Hlan, a member of the regional council, said that “the occupiers are preparing a referendum for the creation of the People’s Republic of Kherson”.

He also said that local officials were asked if they were willing to “cooperate”.

“I categorically refused to cooperate with them,” he added, adding that “the creation of a People’s Republic of Hersonissos will turn our region into a hole without hope, without life and future.”

He also called on his colleagues to refuse to cooperate with Russian forces.

In 2014, when the Russian separatists took control of parts of Lugansk and Donetsk, the two regions were declared “People’s Republics”.

So far there has been no comment from the Russian side on the plans for a referendum.
