He also tapped Kevin Hassett, who had served in his first term, to chair the White House’s National Economic Council (NEC).
The American president-elect Donald Trump named yesterday Tuesday the next representative of USA for the trade (USTR) attorney specializing in international trade law, Mr Jamison Greerwho had already distinguished himself by pursuing an aggressive China policy in the Republican’s previous term.
Also, Mr. Trump selected Kevin Hassett, who had also served during his first term (2017-2021), to take over as chairman of the White House’s National Economic Council (NEC).
The announcements came as Donald Trump raised concerns about the threat of new trade wars, threatening a day earlier to raise tariffs on China, as well as Canada and Mexico, on his first day in office on January 20.
“Jamieson played a key role during my first term in imposing tariffs on China and other countries to combat unfair trade practices,” said Mr. Trump in a statement released via Truth Social.
He also praised the work of Mr. Greer to be amended following a free trade agreement between the US, Mexico and Canada.
Robert Lighthizer’s former chief of staff, who was USTR in Mr. Trump, great opponent of China, Mr. Greer is expected to play a central role in the policy the Republican intends to pursue in the field of international trade.
Jamison Greer linked decisions by Robert Lighthizer that were part of Donald Trump’s policy to force China to change its stance on various issues. Especially the increase in tariffs by 300 billion. dollars on Chinese goods imported into the US was intended to force Beijing to accept the opening of negotiations on bilateral trade relations.
The rank of representative for (including international) trade is equivalent to that of a minister, but its holder reports directly to the White House. It is of strategic importance to essential dimensions of trade policy, especially tariffs and negotiations on trade issues. He also represents the US at the World Trade Organization (WTO), where trade disputes may be decided.
Mr. Greer, an attorney with the California firm King & Spalding, served in the Air Force with action in Iraq, according to Mr. Trump.
The adviser of Mr. Trump on economic issues in his first term Mr. Hassett is also expected to contribute to advancing the Republican economic agenda, which includes tax cuts, and trade negotiations.
“He will play an important role in helping American families recover from the inflation unleashed by (outgoing Democratic President Joe) Biden’s administration,” assured Mr. Trump in a separate statement.
Last week, Donald Trump announced that he would give the Commerce Department to Howard Latnick, chairman and CEO of the investment bank Cantor Fitzgerald and also a fierce critic of China. He also mentioned that Mr. Latnick will assume a role overseeing the USTR, which until now has been reported to the presidency. For this institutional change, the consent of the Congress will be required, where, however, the Republicans will have full control from the beginning of January.
