Around 30% of French journalists say they consume more alcohol, drugs or anti-anxiety drugs because of their profession, according to the results of a survey carried out on behalf of the Etats généraux de l’information and published today.

Among these journalists, 7% estimate that they consume “much” more of these potentially harmful products and 23% “a little more”, according to this survey conducted by the Ipsos institute with the participation of 6,363 journalists with professional media membership credentials .

Of all these professionals who were interviewed, 87% consider that the level of stress is increased in their profession and 23% declare that they have experienced overwork at some point.

However, 73% of the respondents declare that they are fulfilled by their profession, which they first of all perceive as a public function. However, a majority of them (56%) do not recommend it to their children.

The participants feel the very negative opinion of the citizens towards the media and journalists. And 87% report that they have already been confronted with unpleasant comments or aggression in public space, i.e. physical violence for 21%.

Finally, 56% of the respondents consider that Artificial Intelligence is mainly a threat to the profession of journalist in general.
