Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama announced on Saturday a series of measures to tackle rising prices due to the global energy crisis and the war in Ukraine.

The Albanian prime minister presented a seven-meter package aimed at supporting retirees and vulnerable groups of the population, private and public sector workers, as well as farmers.

The first measure, which concerns pensions, includes the allocation of 3.6 billion leks (approximately 29 million euros) for the adjustment of the new pensions.

The government will support with 3,000 lek (24.2 euros) per month the pensioners, the vulnerable groups of the population and the beneficiaries of benefits, who receive less than the minimum wage.

It will also provide subsidies to Albanian farmers totaling 1.4 billion lek (11.3m euros)

As for public transport, the government will allocate 500 million lek (about 4 million euros) to cover the increase in ticket prices, so that there is no burden for the passenger public.

From April, the law that provides for zero taxation of salaries up to 40,000 lek (323 euros), a reduction of 50% of the salary tax of 40,000-50,000 lek (403 euros), as well as a reduction of salary tax from 150,000 lek (1,211) will enter into force from April euros) up to 200,000 lek (1,615 euros).

“This law was originally scheduled to take effect in June and 360,000 workers across the country will benefit from its implementation,” Rama said.

In addition, from next month, the minimum wage in Albania will increase to 32,000 lek (258.4 euros) from the current 30,000 lek (242.3 euros).

The government, according to Rama, will increase by 20 billion lek (161.5 million euros) the subsidy of electricity bills for households and small businesses.

The recent rise in prices for fuel and basic necessities has sparked a wave of protests across the country in recent days. On Saturday, thousands of people gathered outside the prime minister’s office in Tirana to express their outrage at the “unbearable price increase”.
