The Russian military announced today that its air force is bombing “extremist groups” in Syria in support of government forces, Russian news agencies reported.
The jihadists and their allies entered Aleppo, Syria’s second-largest city, early this morning after a two-day lightning offensive against the Damascus regime, ending several years of relative calm in northwestern Syria.
“Russian air force strikes against illegal armed groups’ equipment and men, terrorist positions, supplies and artillery“, said a spokesman for the Ministry of Defense, cited by Russian news agencies.
According to the spokesman, 200 militants were “killed” in the last 24 hours.

“The operation to repel the extremist attack continues“said Oleg Ignasyuk, deputy head of the Russian Defense Ministry’s “Reconciliation Center” for Syria.
