Donald Trump announced today that he has nominated Charles Kushner, the father of his son-in-law and former adviser Jared Kushner, to be the US ambassador to France.

It is yet another controversial appointment of a man with a history of trouble with the justice system.

Real estate tycoon Kushner will travel to Paris to “strengthen cooperation between the US and France, our oldest ally and one of our strongest,” the US president-elect said in a post on the Truth Social social network.

Charles Kushner spent a year in federal prison for tax evasion and was pardoned by Donald Trump toward the end of his first term in the White House — a criminal record that raises questions for an American diplomat.

His son Jared Kushner is married to Ivanka Trump, the Republican president-elect’s oldest daughter. Jared Kushner was an adviser to Trump, particularly on the Middle East, during his first term in the White House.

Charles Kushner, now 70, once handed the reins to his son to run the family real estate empire, the Kushner Companies. The reason? Because he had to serve prison time after pleading guilty in 2004 to tax fraud, witness bribery and illegal campaign contributions.

Trump today called Charles Kushner a “brilliant businessman,” a “philanthropist” and a “good negotiator,” without making any reference to his judicial past.
